I run ubuntu as my primary desktop w/ windows xp running in virtual box. Aside from having a powerful programmer friendly command line , one of the other things I really like about ubuntu is I can install most anything using apt-get install, no need spend all day downloading latest binaries for this and that. Kernel compiles are mostly a thing of the past as modules have pretty much fulfill that role now.

We have the HP Color Laserjet 2605dn and mine prints color without issues. Add new printer scanned network found and installed pretty much automatically. I did have to activate proprietary hp driver, but it downloaded and installed it all automatically. Might check that you have activated non-free drivers in the Administration -> Hardware Drivers.

I have 3 monitors at work, but one is actually another machine and I use synergy to share keyboard and mouse. 2 monitors are pretty easy to setup, but I have a feeling you'll need to manually edit xorg.conf to for your second video device. You might find the following useful http://ryonsherman.wordpress.com/2009/02/10/multiple-monitor-setup-using-both-nvidia-and-ati-video-cards-in-linux/

I think you need to calculate and enter $/hr for say Everquest. I think MMOs for the truly addicted come in as a huge value.
